Clint and Janeene Galbraith knew it was a risk, but they decided to start their own business anyway. They weren't only concerned about launching a company but also that southeastern Idaho already seemed to have an abundance of cabinet shops.
Despite this, the Galbraiths aimed to differentiate themselves, and things worked out for the best. Today, their shop, Interwest Cabinet, holds a large percent of the market share and does more than $1 million in business each year. Its coverage area includes Rexburg as well as nearby Wyoming resort towns Jackson Hole and Star Valley, and Big Sky, Montana.
Cabinetmaking has come a long way in the 23 years since the Galbraiths launched their business venture. In Clint's early cabinetmaking days, projects were accomplished through hand tools and measuring sticks, assembling pieces in order to get a visual of a two-dimensional hand drawing of each work. Today, a high-tech computer-aided drafting program allows a three-dimensional look at each project and then feeds the specifications to a machine that cuts the parts.
Clint says Interwest Cabinet's attention to quality has paid off in satisfied customers, which equates to repeat business. His goal was always to compete with quality and value rather than price. At first, the company primarily targeted individual homeowners and repeat jobs came from that, but then Clint and Janeene decided to work with building contractors, which dramatically increased the company's workload.
Interwest Cabinet hasn't been without adversity in its many years of business; in the winter of 2001, a large portion of the shop's roof collapsed under the weight of snow and ice. The accident destroyed more than a third of the company's production floor, but Clint addressed the setback as a way to reorganize and streamline his production methods. And Interwest Cabinet continues to build beautiful cabinetry.
